Five days at double strength
The Powerpac protocol runs 10 mg of fenbendazole per kilogram — twice the rotation dose — every day for five consecutive days. That sustained saturation is what reaches through the gut wall to larvae in their cysts; it is the same patience-beats-force philosophy as the dog shelf's three mornings, stretched to the harder target.
Because the course cannot pause, the cardinal rule is logistical: every day's paste in the barn before day one. A protocol interrupted at day three by a late truck is a protocol restarted.
The larvae ordinary mornings miss
Encysted small strongyles spend the grazing season bricking themselves into the intestinal lining, immune to single-day wormers, then emerge en masse in late winter — the syndrome called larval cyathostominosis, and a genuine colic risk in young, heavily grazed and rescue horses. This is the case the Powerpac was labeled for.
It is also precisely why the course is vet-directed: whether a horse needs it at all is a fecal-count and history judgment, and resistance stewardship means the double dose is aimed, never routine. Bring the question to the clinic before bringing the box to the barn.
